Christie, for me, was way more helpful than I ever could have imagined. Like a sculptor finding unique beauty within a block of marble, so Christie found a unique story within the cluttered chunk of thoughts which I happily shared with her. She was more than a tutor, even more than a friend. She was a compassionate mentor who, at a time of great confusion in my life, helped me find my own voice.

I am not a religious person, but to me Christie is a savior! In high school, I’d never gotten a bad grade on an essay. But when I was rejected from Stanford early decision, I knew it was my personal statement. When I met Christie (the day after I was rejected)–she welcomed me into her home with her warm hug and even warmer smile, and quickly started talking to me about my life, my passions, my inspiration. With Christie, the words just flowed out, one essay after another. My heart and soul on paper. My work felt authentic, and the colleges must have agreed, as I was accepted to most of the schools I applied to and could not be happier now at Harvard.

When I first started thinking about college applications, I had a few ideas about my essays. Every admissions rep had told me that this was an important part of the application, so I knew I had to get it right. When Christie and I first met, I wasn’t sure if it was going to work. I think we went through something like 10 or 11 drafts of my Common App personal statement. Every week, we would go back through what I had written, finding what resonated. Maybe that’s what I valued the most, her ability to closely understand what it was that I needed out of the process. It never seemed like we were just writing an essay. We were trying to get my personality, my outlook, how I see the world, out on the page. And for that, no one was better.

Christie’s help was indispensable throughout the entire college process. I actually enjoyed my afternoons writing essays with her, even the times when she told me to rethink the direction of my essay. Honest advice is something that I value, and with her consistently cheerful demeanor, Christie will give it to you straight to make sure that you will submit the best essay you can.

With Christie’s help, I no longer saw myself as an amalgamation of high school grades, test scores, and flat extracurricular ‘titles’. She helped me step back, breathe, and reflect on the person, the real heart and mind, that I had grown to be through my high school experience. When I actually wrote my college essays, I was able to evoke this newfound sense of confidence and self-appreciation in my application. I am sure that college admissions officers regarded this well, as I ended up getting accepted to every school to which I applied. I am now a very happy and successful student at Yale University, and I really could not have gotten here without Christie’s help. She is well-worth every penny, if not only for getting you into the college of your choice, then for helping you become a fuller and happier human being. The difference between working with Christie and working with some college-prep agency is that Christie really cares about YOU, not the money or the success rates.

As an instructor, Christie is inspirational. During my college application process I was scattered, nervous and intimidated, all of which is fairly standard for high school seniors—nothing is more daunting than being told to ‘write critically about the self.’ When I connected with Christie my biggest problem was a topic-the pitfall of a cliché essay was my worst nightmare. Looking back from where I sit now, happier than ever and so content with my academic career at UC Berkeley, I am convinced it is my essay that propelled my application from average to accepted. Christie 100% gave me the courage to explore new topics in my writing, to write without thinking and find what I care most about. With her enthusiasm and caring nature Christie coerces beautiful prose without you even knowing it is happening. Christie goes above and beyond what you can imagine any standard tutor doing for a student; with genuine care she has not only helped me get into college with a great essay she has left a lasting imprint of what it means to be passionate about writing and self discovery in general.

Four years later, I’m still treasuring the pearls of wisdom Christie gave me. She once told me that if you have YES written all over you from head to toe, then no one can turn you down. The more I’ve thought about it, the more I’ve realized that exuding YES isn’t just a way of attaining your goals or realizing your vision or getting what you want – it goes deeper than that. Being a YES is being someone fearless and sincere, full of light and positivity and confidence. That’s what Christie is, and that’s also what she imparts upon her students.
